Gear Up for 2018 Elk Hunting Season

Elk hunting season is almost upon us.  With a light snow season the herds of mature elk appear to be in great shape, though the drought makes it tough on us New Mexico farmers!

If you are thinking about making 2018 your year to take the elk hunt of a lifetime, it’s time to cut bait!  The 2018 elk hunts are almost sold out.  But we still have a few prime dates left.

Once you’ve secured your hunting dates and made your travel arrangements, it’s time to oil up your gear and make sure everything is in top shape for your hunting adventure.  For starters, let’s take a look at your rifles.  Field and Stream magazine has a number of great articles that detail the steps you should take to make sure your firearm shoots safely, straight and true.  YouTube is another good resource with plenty of videos showing elk hunters how to clean and maintain their gear.  As with all internet content, however, consider the source of these videos.  They’ll range from authoritative to downright awful!

While you’re at it, it’s time to focus on getting yourself in shape too.  Since most of us live in the city, it’s not as easy as it used to be to keep in shape.  Elk hunting can be demanding on your body.  You’ll be rising early in the morning, have a great nutritious breakfast and then hit the fields with your guides in search of trophy elk.  Our private land hunts are all at elevations above 8,000 feet.  If you are coming from flat land like Florida or Texas, it might take a day or two to adjust to the altitude and thinner air of the New Mexico Rocky Mountains.  Fortunately, our air is clear and clean and most people adjust quickly.  Unless you have a regular workout regime or a job that keeps you in shape, it would be wise to step up your game a little bit so you will be in top shape for your trip.

At the Timbers at Chama, we put your enjoyment and safety first.  If you need special accommodations for physical or dietary requirements, just let us know.  And, if you just have special interests or tastes, don’t hesitate to ask.  We will do everything reasonable to make this the elk hunt of your lifetime.  That’s living life Timbers Style!

There’s still a few dates left for the fall 2018 elk season.  Check the dates, then contact us to discuss your plans.  Hope to see you this fall!
